A Monday at Galatoire's by Andre de LaBarre

YES or NO.... this long-standing tradition is still in place at my most treasured institution .... but was this an exception? Where was the line at the door? No aroma of Bourbon Street .... did Galatoire's move to St. Charles Avenue? Had the family opened a "sister" restaurant? And Gilberto was there... thank God my nightmare was over.... GALATOIRE'S was NOT changing ... it was all a dream! Or was it?

On Monday evening July 29th as I entered the door of Le Chat Noir there was no waiting for a table...they too took reservations. As on any given day at Galatoire's the bar was a buzz with those oh so familiar faces. Not one of us this evening anticipating delicious food but the drinks were flowing.. Without the shaved ice!

This was live local theater. A READING OF THE GILBERTO LETTERS. But was it.....a drama ... comedy .. or tragedy? I noticed the proud smiles of contentment as Gilberto and his wife Mila watched Chris Rose open and close these monologues ... they got it..so lets just say its comedy and you too should attend and decide for yourself. Attendee Doc Hawley opined that Chris Rose must have collaborated with Kenneth Holditch on casting and directing ... so drama it is .... and with David Cuthbert in the crowd.... It must be theater! My vote is the whole dismissal of Gilberto is a tragedy!

As more drinks arrived and audience laughed during the reading by local comic Redbean. WTIX-AM's Ron Swobada read the Dakin Williams letter in the opening production but now has been replaced by his understudy Brobson Lutz who gives a "Stella" performance in a sports coat that Dakin would kill for . It was right then that I too started to get the true picture just how much Gilberto meant to the many others in this audience and his loyal costumers. He is missed by so many at Galatoire's. His loyal costumers were here in support and really enjoying the presentation. And Ricky Graham and gang to top it off!

Harry Mayronne escorted and performed with Miss Viola, Wild Bill Dykes read a few more mail in from the www.WeLoveGilberto.com wed site. The house was in stitches as hat clad Claudia Bumgarten did a ME ....or to those in the know Mickey Easterling. The faces of attendees Becky Allen and her Mom Mytis were glued on Skye as she did an interpretive dance during a letter reading from the stack received by the management of Galatoire's. Alex Beard was himself in stitches as he read one of the summated letters. Then came the improv at the piano by Davis Rogan to a letter by Richard Ford. This show is a GO and you should attend one of the two added Aug. performances.

At the bar following the performance I overheard someone ask bartender Greg Matisof "is not this the best inside joke in New Orleans since the Saints?" It drew a response from a happy soul, whose name I will with hold, "well the tickets are cheaper and the beer has less foam!"
